When do you need to have a radio license when using 2-way radios?

I am looking at buying some two way radios, but I have heard that certain distance-capable radios require a license to use. What is the distance before you need to apply for one?

Those hand held jobs you get at Bass Pro shops or Walmart don’t get enough range to require a license, but if you get one capable of using Morse code or talk across the country, you need a "Ham license" which is easier to get now than 40 years ago. Good luck.

The FRS radios do not require a license, but I belive the GPRS one (slightly longer range the FRS) do require some form of registration.
