Why is Christian radio music so awful?
July 8, 2010 - 7:45 am
Let’s put the lyrics aside. That is not what I am referring to in this question. But I am a musician/composer/songwriter and when I hear Christian music, I find creativity in the musicianship and song structure to be severely lacking. The melodies often don’t span over an octave with a few but very basic chord changes. Where is the musical creativity? Christian music has to be the most boring and uninspiring music on the radio! Does anyone agree?
LOL I have heard this complaint from so many times from other christians. And as a christian I agree!

Because all radio music is awful (save for those times they play 80’s Metal songs). They have to play the new and popular music, which is unoriginal and dull.

Because with all due respect, you don’t know what you are talking about or have no taste in good music. Christian music use to stink years ago, but modern Christian contemporary has never been better and even rivals secular bands. Christian songs have blown secular songs right off the charts.

No. I don’t agree. The most boring and uninspiring so-called ‘music’ is rap.

No, I don’t agree. But that’s a very subjective opinion. Can you be sure you aren’t being influenced by your beliefs about Christianity in general?
Of course, if your Christian radio station only plays the "safe" stuff, I can see how you’d say that. Check out some bands like "Skillet", "Kutlass", and "Disciple".
Rebecca St. James hasn’t released anything in a while, but I think you might find her albums, "Transformed", "If I Had One Chance To Tell You Something", and "God" to be very creative.

Because you don’t seem to listen to the good stuff, sweety. That’s all. (For someone who is a musician with no ’soul’, hmmm,,,)

I think the idea is to get the listener’s focus away from the music and onto the lyrics…but I agree, lots of the music is kind of bland. (Lots of it is really good, too! But then again, I’m not exactly musical.)

Too funny…
Are you really suggesting that country music…or most pop, rap, hip hop, and other "popular" forms of music have melodies that span over an octave and/or a significant number of chord changes?
If so, please provide examples of what you called "musical creativity" because I sure haven’t heard it on any radio station that plays "popular" music. Classical, yes…jazz too…but "pop" music, Christian or otherwise, isn’t generally noted for its complexity or creativity!

I agree, there is some really awful stuff out there. Most of it us bland, derivative and crashingly boring.
The same goes for Christian poetry too.
I’m a Christian, but I prefer real rock music, with all its faults. I grew up listening to Bowie, T Rex,Iggy Pop, Alice Cooper and was there at the start of punk in London and music was exciting and innovative. There are one or two good Christian rock bands (though I’m struggling to name one), but most of its like it was made up by someone who has only heard MOR stuff from the 80s.
Blech!

All of this new age music lacks creativity. It is not just christian music. I have not heard any good music in a while. The last new albums I bought was Guns N’ Roses Chinese Democracy and Blue October’s Approaching Normal. I have not even used the radio, watch MTV, or VH1 in a long time. I do not want to hear Miley Cyrus sing.
