I have found some portable uhf/vhf radios. I need to know if and how to program to match my companys frequency?

I have my cheap portable with bad reception from my employer, i found some sweet radios that have higher wattage and are waterproof etc. I need to know how whould i go about programing my radio that i want to buy to the companys frequency. How would i find the frequency? How would i program it? There may be an encryption, i am a public safety employee, how do you bypass that?

Take it to the person/company that takes care of your organization’s radios.

Would radios work after a major apocalypse?

If a nuclear war destroyed almost all of the big cities in the US, would a person be able to get or send out a message through a radio or a walkie talkie? Or would radio towers have to be rebuilt? If radios didn’t work, how hard would it be to get AM or FM frequencies up again?
Researching for a novel. Thanks!

During an atomic blast, an electromagnetic pulse (EMP) is generated. This EMP destroys electronic circuitry in items such as radios, televisions and computers. It also destroys electric wiring and transmission lines.

Your home will not have normal electricity to operate communication devices. Even though some communication satellites in space will still be functioning, cell phones won’t work because the receiving stations will be out of commission .

If your battery operated radio or walkie-talkie is shielded, say with aluminum foil, it will be just fine and work properly immediately after the pulse. The trouble is, no commercial radio stations will be transmitting. Some governments may have shielded transmitters for emergencies.

What are the best walkie-talkies (2-way radios) to go from our house to a house 6 blocks away?

Would like to get my son walkie-talkies to use to communicate with his best friend during these winter months. Friends house is about 6 blocks away, over the train tracks, all suburban/residential in between (if that matters).

Does anyone have any experience with 2-way radios being used for this distance in this kind of neighborhood? What brand/model worked? Which one didn’t?

Depending on how old your son is, and if his friends’ parents are willing to spend a little cash, you may want to get them CB radios. You do need to realize that they can talk to almost anyone.

You also might want to look in to some high end walkie talkies. These might offer more privacey but they all seem to only come with 1 charger for the pair. You may be able to get adaptors or extra chargers.

How do you connect iPods to car radios?

November 19, 2009 - 5:22 am 1 Comment

I saw some people connect iPods to their car radios with this cord thing and I’ve never seen that anywhere. Where can I get that?

There are a few ways to get your iPod connected to your car stereo. You can use the adapter that allows your iPod to broadcast music through an unused radio channel, if your car stereo has an Aux adapter built in you can plug a cable into your ipod headphone jack into an Aux input in the stereo or you can use the old fashioned cassette adapter.

Where can I find a wholesaler for Weather Radios?

I am wanting to sell Weather Radios in my store. Where can I find a wholesaler/Vendor that sells Weather Radios?

What kind of store do you have? If you already sell consumer electronic products any of your current distributors should be able to help you. I have accounts with several and am also a distributor and get much inventory factory direct. Won’t advertise here so if you need more help you may email me.

I’m looking for a portable radio with good reception. Are digital display radios the same as digitally tuned?

November 15, 2009 - 9:41 am 2 Comments

Some radios spec digital display while others spec digital tuned (which obviously have a digital display also). Can a radio be analog tuned with a digital display? Also, do digital radios have better reception than analog?

portable radios with digital display may still be analog tuned. this is common in the shortwave band sets. in channelized communications, like the AM and FM broadcast bands, digital tuning is faster and more accurate than analog. this is because stations are on discrete steps to begin with. however for general coverage and ham bands, stations are scattered on any oddball frequency so tuning with digital can take more time to scan and must use finer steps (100 hz per step oppossed to 200 khz per step in the FM band). by nature, once tuned in, digital is more stable than most analog oscillators. some digital tuning systems create more phase noise and potential for birdies than high class analog, but otherwise performance is similar. digital is a far better option for recieving regular broadcast stations.

Where can I find radios that can connect to your mp3 player?

Where can I find radios that can connect to your mp3 player? Not for a car but for home use, like I want one in the bathroom so I can listen to it while I am getting ready for work.

K Mart has a sale on a great speaker system for only 19.99. I cant remember what the name of it is but it works by batteries or plug into a wall outlet. I bought myself one and my husband one for work. I bought another one just to have for an extra Christmas gift if needed. You can’t beat the price and it is in the sale paper this week on sale until Sunday. I purchased mine when it was regular priced at 49.99 and my husbands when it went on sale this week. You can’t beat the price anywhere. It gives out great sound and I could not be happier with mine. It is not a radio though just a speaker system but I love it. Easy to carry from room to room, and I use mine for the same purpose you stated. when I am getting ready for work. Love it.

How far away can you pick up signals transmitted by aircraft/ATC radios?

November 1, 2009 - 7:41 pm 6 Comments

I’m going to get a radio scanner soon and was wondering how far aircraft and ATC radios transmit? I live 25 miles from the airport, the planes come in en route to land within 5 miles of my house so I’m sure I could hear there transmissions to ATC but would I be able to hear ATC’s replies or the airports ATIS? Thanks in advance.
Hey I can decide which answer to choose, lots of good ones. Thanks guys, I’ll send it to vote :)

You will be able to hear aircraft from a much greater distance than you will be able to hear the ground station. Using the antenna on the scanner, you may hear aircraft 50+ miles away, depending on altitude, but you will need to be within a few miles of the ground station to catch that end of the communications. An outside antenna mounted as high as possible would help considerably. In your case, the odds of hearing the ground station, using the scanner antenna, are very slim .
