How can I find out if my radio input to my subwoofers is working?

June 21, 2010 - 1:44 am 2 Comments

I recently installed subwoofers in my truck but can’t get them to play off of my radio. I can plug an ipod to the amp and the Subwoofers will play off of the ipod. But if I connect the rca jacks from my amp to the radio deck input, the subwoofers wont play. Need help please.

Side Note: My radio works, just need help with the input and output

Connecting the amp inputs to a radio deck input won’t work. You have to connect a preamp OUTPUT from the radio deck to the amp inputs.

Most aftermarket head units include at least one set of RCA preamp outputs. Stock receivers don’t usually have preamp outputs. The solution is to "tap" the speaker outputs (most often rear speakers) and connect them to a line output converter (LOC) and use RCA cables from the LOC to your amp inputs.

Here’s an excellent 2-channel LOC with amp remote turn-on:

What range of radio frequencies are civilians allowed to listen to on radio scanners?

April 16, 2010 - 10:22 pm 2 Comments

I want to buy a quality radio scanner, and am looking for a scanner that can detect all legally allowable frequencies. Anyone know what all the legally allowable frequencies are and perhaps a radio scanner that can pick up all of them or close to all of them? An answer would be highly appreciated. Thanks!

you are allowed to listen to any frequency that the scanner can receive.

Scanners are required to hardware block cellular frequencies, so scaners do not and cannot be modified to, listen to cell freqs.

The rules still exist for listening to communications. The Communications Act of 1934 still exists. You may listen to anything, you may not utilize third party information, what you hear, stays with you.

There are exceptions, broadcast radio is exempt, hobby services are exempt, unlicensed services are exempt.

Why does my radio restart the moment I start my car?

April 12, 2010 - 10:28 pm 1 Comment

My radio always restarts the moment I start my car..
Is that because my starter motor takes all power from my battery and leaves nothing behind for my radio?
My mom her car doesnt have this problem.

Is this an aftermarket radio? If so it most aftermarkets have a permanent power feed line on them. Someone may have installed it incorrectly.
If it’s factory, it’s possible that a connection is loose or the radio itself has a short. You may also want to replace the radio fuse in your car to see if that helps.

What is the difference between radio waves and TV waves?

March 28, 2010 - 4:25 am 2 Comments

Does the FM radio works similar to a TV? I mean the way it transmits signals. Do they have the same signals that they receive?

I am just a bit curious here. My Nokia 5310 XM has FM radio. I am just wondering If I can turn my cellphone into a TV by downloading some kind of java application that receives signals just like the built in FM radio.

TV waves are much more complex than radio waves, although they can use the same frequency. The entire FM radio band is actually located between TV channels 6 and 7! But it’s not possible to do what you suggest. As far as I know, cellphones that play video do so by decoding digital formats, like MPEG,from the Internet. However, technology is coming that will enable mobile TV reception since transmission went digital last year. Chrysler has a setup like this coming out in some of it’s minivans.

How does a radio filter out waves of different frequencies?

How does a radio filter out waves of different frequencies?
With all the different frequencies of waves in the air, how does the sound out of a radio come out clear? What do I need to make one?

dear radio does not filter any waves!! let me explain..
Radio has a demodulator in it. it is a PLL. now the demodulator ics like MM74HC4046 are connected in a standard circuit. when you tune the radio for a frequency, which is actually changing the resistor values for the oscillator, you demodulate the frequencies one by one. supose your range is from 300 KHz to 10 MHZ then as you turn the knob, and your circuit has range 300KHz – 12 MHZ thn your starting freq is 300KHz. then as you turn the knob you increase or decrease the resistance and start tuning the circuit. then your first station is at 598khz. at that freq u hear the channel. then as you turn along it goes higher. at 3.9MHZ you listen to different channel. so thats no problem. also the PLL is there which gets locked at a frequency and so there is a conitnuous demodulation at this frequency. I’ve already told you one ic and there are many others. also another is 7046.
if you want ot make one then search FM demodulators by 4046 and use the MM74HC4046. it gives higher selection from short wave, medium wave and FM also.

What Radio communications do the Police use to respond to calls?

March 16, 2010 - 11:19 am 4 Comments

You know how you see the police talk into the radios they have clipped on to their belt or that sits in their car? Is that a CB or a Ham Radio? Or is it something else? I would appreciate it if you could answer if you have the law enforcement experience or are related to somebody who is law enforcement.

My county dispatch recently switched to 800Mhz. Other places I have worked transmitted on 400Mhz and although it’s a dinosaur by comparison, 150Mhz. These are all FM frequencies.

What is the cheapest way to get streaming radio?

March 6, 2010 - 11:32 pm 2 Comments

I live in a remote rural area with no radio reception. I do have internet however, and since there are many stations streaming online, I could connect with a "whole house transmitter" which would rebroadcast the station so that I could receive it with various radios in the house. My question is: What is the best way to get a continuous streaming signal, 24/7? I don’t want to but a computer to use solely for this task, and most of the internet radios that I have read about don’t have good reviews. Any Ideas?

theres a great media player out there that i use called Winamp and one of the things it has is an internet radio streaming function, it has AOL radio and Shoutcast radio and both have tons of stations to choose from, i prefer AOL radio because it comes with a lot more channel options.

place to download is winamp.com
its completely free and its a rather small program

How does one get into radio voice over work?

February 24, 2010 - 7:34 pm 4 Comments

I hear people on the radio & think it’s a total possibility for me. I’m a master at voices, sounds & accents – & I think my city is big enough that there might be some opportunities through local businesses who have radio ads.

Yet…I have NO CLUE on how to get started. Anyone?

Put together a cd of you voicing a commercial or public service announcement (be creative) showing off your different voices, accents etc. Make the cd 2 or 3 minutes long if you can but no longer than that. Next check around your city for (legit) recording studios ask if they do television or radio commercials and give them a copy of your cd. Get cards made so you can pass them out as you network or meet people in all types of business (also radio/tv stations) that may want you to voice their commercial or refer you to other business’.
Recording studios do this type of work all the time and they are your best bet for finding(paid) work and they will let you know if you actually have the voice for this type of work or not.
Good Luck!
