What Flavor of linux to serve Online Radio?

January 28, 2011 - 2:06 pm No Comments

I want to start an online radio station using icecast as my server software and winamp/oddcast as my streamer. I already know that I’m going to stream with Win and Serve with Ubuntu, but I’m having a bit of trouble figuring out if I should use Ubuntu server edition, desktop edition or a completely different flavor of linux all together. What should I use?

I host an internet radio station on winamp too and I use Ubuntu Server 10.04. If all you’re going to use it for is the radio station then that’s your best bet. Just install Ubuntu Server Edition, install the winamp server and save your music you want to stream.

Good Luck and Enjoy!

How to start an online radio station?

I’m in high school, and a friend and I really want to start an online radio station. We basically just want a few broadcasts a week, where we can play some music and maybe take some requests from friends, talk about events happening in our town, and have some callers call in and talk about whatever they want. We don’t want a super long broadcast, probably just an hour at the most.

How would I go about starting this? Would it be free?
Thanks.

it’s possible and it’s free..

All you need is winamp and shoutcast (plugin + gui) and all of them are free.

it’s simple, all you need is a computer, and internet connection and a public IP .

and you broadcast as long as you want.

Have fun, oh you can search for shoutcast on youtube for a video tutorial on how to use it, but it’s simple!

Can you play music on your online radio station without any kind permission?

January 18, 2011 - 5:46 pm 1 Comment

I need to know if I need permission to play songs on my online radio station.
I’m not talking about unsigned artists because I know I can contact them.
But I mean like, for example. If I want to play a Drake song, Lil Wayne, Kanye West, do I need permission or can I just play them?

Great question and one you should ask your Web Master. Personally, I don’t think you would need any kind of permission as long as your music files are not down-loadable.

The playing of music is not against the law, per se. It’s when you make it available to be reproduced at no cost that the problems begins.

Otherwise, you’re merely providing free "airtime" for the artists in question, something I think they’d be appreciative about.

How can two people control an online radio station?

Me and my cousin want to start and online radio station and I have the music in my computer but I want for my cousin to be able to interrupt the input signal and broadcast herself from her computer. I heard of some pay website that you can upload music to the server so that you don’t have ur computer running 24/7 and just connect when you want, I was wondering if that can be possible with 2 people? Any help will be appreciated, thanks.

I would recommend using RadioDJ. You will first need to go to http://www.shoutcast.com/download to download Winamp and the SHOUTCast DSP Plug-in. Then take a trip over to http://www.radiodj.ro/tutorials/tutorial_1_installing_mysql_and_radiodj.html to learn how to install MySQL and RadioDJ. You need to download RadioDJ at http://www.radiodj.ro/downloads.html. Once you have everything setup, go to myradiostream.com and register for an account. This will allow you to stream to their server.

Make sure your cousin does this on her computer too. Now in RadioDj you can import all of your music. But, you are also going to import your cousins myradiostream.com URL as a internet stream. You can create an event in RadioDj that will load your cousins audio at a certain time.

This is what we do at our school. We syndicate shows.

Just remember, before you go broadcasting, make sure you have a license to play music. If you are broadcasting in a high school for a class, you do not need a license.

Can an online radio show legally broadcast your telephone number?

December 24, 2010 - 10:26 am 2 Comments

I called into an online radio show to make a comment. They didn’t like what I had to comment about and told everyone my phone number. People were broadcasting my number in the chat room too! Is it legal for them to just give out my number like that?

The radio show can not. It is against the law to do with out your permission.

Normally they give only your first name and City where you live.

How can I advertise my online radio station?

December 23, 2010 - 3:40 am 2 Comments

I need a cheap way of doing it. I’ve got a whole lot of free time and no one’s hiring out here and I need something to occupy my time, running an online music radio station is a good way to do it right? How do I get the word out?

I’m guessing any success with advertising your radio station would put you on the radar of the music establishment’s legal goon squad, whose sole job is to catch and persecute permission/copyright/royalty violators. Currently there seem to be more ASCAP/BMI lawyers than music listeners.

You’re good if you stay below the radar, grow your listener base by playing good stuff, not by advertising. Take cease and desist letters seriously and fold up shop once the suits knock on your door. Be foolish about it and they’ll take the shirt off your back.

Have fun, support local bands, cultivate a global audience, cut and run to have fun another day.

Good luck.

How to listen to radio online while i am online on a Mac?

December 16, 2010 - 3:02 am 1 Comment

Do i need to download windows media for mac in order to hear radio because after going to online radio and then to another site, the previous site gets disconnected.

i like to use pandora or slacker radio. they usually don’t stop music playing unless i’m using it with a certain program, but its fine with internet browsing.
