Is there a difference between am radio and fm radio?

January 28, 2010 - 11:30 pm 3 Comments

Today is one of those days where the weirdest thoughts come up. I was wondering is there a difference between am radio and fm radio and if there is what is it? Why is fm more popular?

FM allows for more bandwidth (stereo), which results in better audio quality (AM is Mono).
FM also is more robust to noise and interference, which improves quality even further.

What’s a free program or something I can use?

I have been trying to download from BBC Radio Player for months now and so far not found a solution, however I am working with Linux.

If you are working with Windows then it can be done by using Total Recorder http://www.highcriteria.com/ however it is not free.

How can I start an online radio station?

January 28, 2010 - 11:30 pm 2 Comments

What is the best resource for starting an online radio station?

I started one a year ago, but I’m about to let the license expire. There are a LOT of legal issues going on right now that make running a station less and less attractive. If you’re looking to start a station whose format is talk, you might have better fortune. The RIAA is trying to squeeze a lot of money out of broadcasters (for which they are already paying royalties per play) than they are already getting. There is talk of a 200% or better markup in the months to come.

To configure your PC, you’ll also need to know a little about TCP/IP.

Your best bet for starting is to try Live365 or Shoutcast. They’re the best free resources for aspiring broadcasters.

Good luck.

January 28, 2010 - 11:30 pm 4 Comments

Does anyone know of any sites that have live radio coverage of AFL football matches that I can access in China? Any help would be appreciated.

I believe AFL.com.au has the live radio coverage.

Click on game you want in the bar at the top of the page, and a window should pop up, and when it loads, you can click on the radio station you want.

It applies for all countries.

Can radio stations tell if you are tunning out of their frequency?

January 28, 2010 - 11:30 pm 4 Comments

I’m just wondering because the extremely irritating TECATE LIGHT commercials really tick me off. Whenever that commercial comes up I either switch the radio off or tune onto another station. I guess I’m hoping enough people do this so that radio stations see that people are getting fed up with TECATE LIGHT.

…TECATE LIGHT.

If you are in the US and taking part in an Arbitron PPM survey – yes. Otherwise (and this is 99%) no.

UNLESS it’s Sirius or XM, in which case they might be able to track listening that closely.

I’ve found that when a commercial offends me, a letter (or email) to the advertising dept. or Investor reations dept. will register on their radar. See below.

What are those kinds of radios where you can listen to what the cops are doing?

January 26, 2010 - 2:27 pm 4 Comments

what are these kinds of radios, perhaps where could I buy one?

THANKS

The units are called "Scanners".
I don’t know where you live but in canada most of the police services have moved from using regular communications systems to a newer system known as "Trunking". You will need to by a trunk tracker scanner in order to listen to what they are saying. These scanners are a bit more difficult to program than the older type because not only do you need to program the frequency the police are using, you also have to program a 4 digit code for the division you want to listen to.
If you live in an area where the cops have not moved to a trunking system then you can use a conventional scanner and listen to cops, fire, ambulance, cordless phone calls,
ham radio, and much more. You can buy either type of these scanners at several electronics stores like "Radio Shack"
"The Source In Canada" as well as stores that sell communications equipment like ham and cb radios. There are several brands but I like the "Uniden" units. You can get handheld battery operated models or one’s for mobile or home base use. If you choose a mobile or home model then there are several types of antennas you can choose from. just make sure you get an antenna that is made for the frequncies you want to listen to. If you want to save some cash you will find tons of scanners for sale on "Ebay".

Take care.

I want to have a Christian radio on the FM waves. How does it work?

You’ll need to contact the FCC and ask them. That’s all government controlled.

Can I record streaming radio to my hd?

As time moves on there’s more and more great internet radio sites. Is there any software I can use to grab some of the music and store it on my hard drive?
If the sound is there, there has to be a way to capture it.

Use Realplayer.
