What is the best available radio for good AM reception?

December 23, 2009 - 2:36 pm 1 Comment

I live in California and need a good radio that gets AM stations clearly. This radio is to be used at home.

I would suggest the GE SuperRadio III. Amazon has them and I’ve occasionally seen them in RadioShack Stores. They don’t look like much, but having used one in the past and comparing it’s performence to my top-quality Sangean ATS-909 reciever. The AM reception is unreal..picking up stations hundred of miles away with little effort and using the internal antenna (milage varies on location)

They can be had for about $45. http://www.amazon.com/7-2887-Superadio-III-Portable-Radio/dp/B00000J061

How does a RLC circuit work, and how do FM receivers use RLC circuits to tune into a radio station?

December 23, 2009 - 2:36 pm 3 Comments

I know that a FM radio uses a RLC circuit to demodulate the broadcast, but I really have no clue how the hell it works. I’d appreciate it if someone with a background in electrical engineering, or anybody who understands electricity and basic circuits could help me.

Forget the R, it’s the LC part that is important. And it’s not used to demodulate the signal, it’s used to select and amplify the signal.

Very simplisticly: An older FM radio has a variable capacitor and fixed inductor. The cap enables the user to adjust the C so that the parallel resonant frequency of the LC is at the frequency of the station you want to listen to. Actually there are two ganged variable caps, the first tunes the LC of the RF amplifier at the input the second adjusts the frequency of the local oscillator which beats against the amplified RF signal to form the IF frequency of 10.7 MHz, which is ampllifed further.

If you don’t understand parallel resonant circuit, this is meaningless, so read up on that first.

How to create own radio streaming and add the radio into my blogspot? can you give me step by step?

December 23, 2009 - 2:36 pm 2 Comments

I got collection of 22000 songs, and i would like to create own internet radio and DJ as well. Do anyone know how to do this in my blog page(blogspot) ?

Not an easy task! You need a radio streamer server (shoutcast is a good one). However, you won’t be able to get it on your blogspot, unless the blogspot is yours and on your own server!

Should babies sleep with no sound in the room or with classical music/ talk radio?

December 23, 2009 - 2:36 pm 9 Comments

Is it ok to have soft music playing while my baby is sleeping or is it better to have it quiet with no noise

I know their brains need to develop, so is music helping or hurting?

I usually keep the radio on NPR and sometimes there is music and sometimes there is talking, do you think it makes a difference for their brain developement if sometimes it’s just talking?

Any studies or info would help. Thanks!!

When you are asleep do you hear anything?? Maybe in light patches but when you are deeply asleep you don’t even smell anything, lol.

With both my kids I have had a radio or cd playing in their rooms from birth to keep a familiar environment and when they stir it hasn’t changed from when they went to bed. It can also help with making all the other house noises not seem so loud and the nights after everyone else is asleep the house doesn’t seem so quiet.

Personal preference, other parents are horrified my 4yo still has a cd playing in her room all night, lol.

How do I fix my Media Center, Live TV and Radio?

December 23, 2009 - 2:36 pm 1 Comment

Two days ago my computer decided to remain at a black screen whenever I click on Live TV. Radio just doesn’t play anymore, but that may be because my antenna isn’t hooked up anymore, so I could probably fix that. The main problem is that Live TV doesn’t work. When I open Media Center its normal until I go to Live TV. Live TV doesn’t come up as No Signal, it just remains black. It’s very annoying because I usually use it to record football games and such, because I can’t always be home, or watching that game.

My computer is an HP with Windows XP Media Center Edition 2002 Sevice Pack 2.

The XP video decoder is a critical element in MCE. Run the checfking program from the link below.

Can you play DVDs from within MCE? If you can, the decoder is probably good.
email me if you need help.

Why did the uk move from describing a radio station by its wavelength to its frequency?

December 23, 2009 - 2:36 pm 1 Comment

In the seventies (and long before) we knew a radio station’s wavelength, e.g. BBC Radio 1 was broadcast on 275 and 285 metres medium wave. At some point all radio stations forgot about wavelength and advertised their frequency, e.g. 1053 and 1089 MHz. I’m perfectly aware of the mathematical relationship between frequency and wavelength, but why was the change made?

Stephen W I searched on line and could not find your answer. Will keep saearching and get back to you.

What headphones work with Binatone Terrain 550 radios?

December 21, 2009 - 12:02 am 1 Comment

I am looking into buying some Binatone Terrain 550 radios but only if i can find compatible head phones for them. I don’t believe they have standard headphone jacks. If anyone knows of any headphones / adapters that work with them i would be grateful for any information.

I think there has been a similar question to this but the link was too old.

Regards

Your best bet would be to ask a stockist.
