What are the best walkie-talkies (2-way radios) to go from our house to a house 6 blocks away?

November 21, 2009 - 8:29 am 17 Comments

Would like to get my son walkie-talkies to use to communicate with his best friend during these winter months. Friends house is about 6 blocks away, over the train tracks, all suburban/residential in between (if that matters).

Does anyone have any experience with 2-way radios being used for this distance in this kind of neighborhood? What brand/model worked? Which one didn’t?

Depending on how old your son is, and if his friends’ parents are willing to spend a little cash, you may want to get them CB radios. You do need to realize that they can talk to almost anyone.

You also might want to look in to some high end walkie talkies. These might offer more privacey but they all seem to only come with 1 charger for the pair. You may be able to get adaptors or extra chargers.

How do I make my textarea disable upon selecting a radio button?

November 21, 2009 - 8:29 am 1 Comment

I have a code like this:

<form>
<input type=text>
<input type=radio>
<input type=radio>
<input type=radio>
</form>

and I want the third radio button to clear and "gray-out" the text area when it is selected.

What do I need to do to the code?

Create a javascript function like this:
<script language="javascript">
function toggleTxtA(state) {
if(state==1)
document.getElementById("txtA").disabled=true;
else
document.getElementById("txtA").disabled=false;
}

Now in your 3rd input element, assign this function to the onclick – like this:

<input type="radio" onclick="toggleTxtA(1)"/>

You can use the other radio button to enable the textarea back, just use a value other than 1 when calling toggleTxtA function.

Obviously – here – txtA in the javascript is the name of the textarea.

Can an outdoor antenna boost FM radio signals if the radio is not connected to the antenna?

November 21, 2009 - 8:29 am 4 Comments

I’ve got a shower radio that had a little antenna wire hanging out of it that broke off and now the reception is not good. I’m buying an outdoor antenna for my tv. The antenna claims to "boost FM radio signals", but I wonder if it will make a difference even if the radio is not connected with a wire/cable to the antenna?

It will have to be connected.
Most wideband TV antennas include the FM broadcast band as well.
FM broadcast frequencies don’t couple the way AM broadcast ones do with a tuned loop antenna. (an AM antenna simply placed near it improves reception)
You might get lucky, and a reflection from the antenna will improve your reception. Or a reflection could cause local interference and worsen reception. For the most part it will have no effect at all.

Do you need a licence to play classic FM classical music, or radio 4 talk radio as there are no artists?

I knoow you need a licence to play music on the radio, but could I play non copyright music, or talk radio in my workplace. Also do i need a licence if there are only 2 employees?

with classical music you still have artist. someone always gets the royalties from the music.
Is the music that you want to play friends of yours or an acquaintance?
Are you going to be playing it on a disc?
I think you still need permission from the owner of the music to play it, whether it be orginial or someone elses.

how can i speed up the buffering process to listen to live radio?

November 21, 2009 - 8:29 am 2 Comments

i can hear the radio but the sound starts and stops over and over.it is just really slow.

"
Increasing the memory can help somewhat, but it sounds like whatever you use for radio is not up to the process. It might be better to get a Higher version of media Player or whatever Internet Radio app you have so that it can buffer better

"
ithink non of the above will help , the only way is to imrove your internet connection , your speed is slow,

In writing, I want to mention the name of a radio station. Would I underline the radio station name or put it in quotes? How would you do Oldies 106.9?

You give it as such

"KRUD Radio, Moldy Oldies at 106.9"

if you type in name of your favourite radio station, you may have to sign up to station but only takes a minute, theres usually a ‘live’ button to click on to listen to it on your comp!! add it to favourites or put on desktop, hope this helps.

How come Atlanta and Detroit have the same radio stations?

November 21, 2009 - 8:29 am 1 Comment

Well I’m from Ann Arbor, Michigan and the radio stations up there are from Detroit and the main ones are like 95.5 and 97.9 and they have the exact same stations in ATL with the same genres so wats up with that lol.

They just have the same station numbers. Now, they could possibly be the same station, like Ryan Seacrest and Delilah are played nationwide, but they pre record station numbers and areas so it ONLY sounds like your city it is being recognized by them…
