Would radios work after a major apocalypse?

November 23, 2009 - 1:21 pm 1 Comment

If a nuclear war destroyed almost all of the big cities in the US, would a person be able to get or send out a message through a radio or a walkie talkie? Or would radio towers have to be rebuilt? If radios didn’t work, how hard would it be to get AM or FM frequencies up again?
Researching for a novel. Thanks!

During an atomic blast, an electromagnetic pulse (EMP) is generated. This EMP destroys electronic circuitry in items such as radios, televisions and computers. It also destroys electric wiring and transmission lines.

Your home will not have normal electricity to operate communication devices. Even though some communication satellites in space will still be functioning, cell phones won’t work because the receiving stations will be out of commission .

If your battery operated radio or walkie-talkie is shielded, say with aluminum foil, it will be just fine and work properly immediately after the pulse. The trouble is, no commercial radio stations will be transmitting. Some governments may have shielded transmitters for emergencies.

What is the most popular radio production software?

November 23, 2009 - 1:21 pm 1 Comment

I am starting a radio production course this year and I want to get some experience using the software that is used in radio stations for cueing the music and ads, and for talk over etc.

Anyone have any ideas what the most popular software is?

You need to visit a radio station because your idea of what is used in broadcasting is about as far from reality as it can get.

Radio stations have used basically the same equipment for 50 years or more… a MIXING BOARD, turn tables, tape record and playback decks and a whole assortment of audio sweetning EQUIPMENT.. they aren’t doing it at home on their PC… they are using, in some cases, State of the Art recording equipment… but at the other end of the scale.. out in the midwest… they don’t even have the basics, since their programming comes in by satellite.

Can I pull in a FM radio station that is 75 miles away?

November 23, 2009 - 1:20 pm 5 Comments

There is a station that is about 75 miles away (as the crow flies) that I would like to be able to listen to in my home. The station frequency is 89.3, if that is of any consequence. I know that having a higher quality radio would help and currently I only have cheap radios in the house. I have also heard that I can make a homemade antenna with a specific length that would be optimized for the frequency of my choice. So, my question is, Is a homemade antenna coupled with a good quality radio going to do a good job of bringing in a fm signal from 75 miles away? Any other suggestions to accomplish this? Thanks!

75 miles can be done. first you need a radio that has an external antenna connection. next, go to radio shack, they have FM antennas that are directional, so that they hopefully will block out other stations that may be closer to you.

However not all FM stations are treated equally. The class C stations run 100,000 watts and get out for long distance. Some are class A, LPFM or translators and might be running only 10 to 250 watts, which may make the reception highly dependent on local interference conditions.

Try website www.radio-locator.com they will list what stations you should be able to receive.

Can you record music from streaming radio?

I use RealPlayer all the time or Windows Media Player.
The radio stations you can catch with those are pretty cool.

Is there a way to record some of their music on my computer?

How can I start a small Internet radio station for me and my friends?

November 23, 2009 - 1:20 pm 2 Comments

Ok, so we started playing around on Yahoo Voice Conference and me and a friend decided to start a little pretend radio station on it. Well now we made a website for it, and I’d like to make a live feed from my computer microphone to the site and a playlist so I can play music on it. Kind of like Maple-Radio but more simple….a LOT more simple.

Search Google for "Web Radio"

You will find several web site sponsers for radio stations you can link too.

They don’t need you to be on 24 hours a day to provide signal.

Good Luck

What is the difference between WiFi Radio, Internet Radio, and HD Radio?

November 23, 2009 - 1:20 pm 1 Comment

I am new to WiFi Radio (a few weeks) and I am amazed at how fantastic it is. And simple to program and operate. Now I am curious to know about Internet Radio and HD Radio as I often see them advertised. Can you compare the three?

WiFi radio is a radio that runs from WiFi and dosn’t stream through your computer but still through the Internet, so, it is still a form of internet radio.

HD radio is just like HD TV its a very hi quality internet radio (there it is again)

How much do radio stations pay to play professional recording artists music on air?

November 23, 2009 - 1:20 pm 1 Comment

How much do radio stations pay per song they play?? How do they get permission to play different songs??

Most commercial stations have music locenses from ASCAP, BMI and SESAC, allowing them to play pretty much all available music.

This money goes to the writers, not the artist. The performance royalty is a battle in progress now.

The amount paid to the above licensing organizations varies as it is determined by a number of factors. These may include market size, station revenue, and other factors.
